  14.         <text><span class="style42"></span><span class="style12">LIBERIA</span><span class="style14"></span><span class="style42">Official name: </span><span class="style13">The Republic of Liberia</span><span class="style42">Member of: </span><span class="style13">UN, OAU, ECOWAS</span><span class="style42">Area: </span><span class="style13">99067 km2 (38250 sq mi)</span><span class="style42">Population: </span><span class="style13">2885000 (1993 est); in 1994 up to 800000 of this total were refugees in neighboring countries</span><span class="style42">Capital: </span><span class="style13">Monrovia 465000 (1987 est)</span><span class="style42">Language: </span><span class="style13">English (official)</span><span class="style42">Religions: </span><span class="style13">animist (50%), Sunni Islam (26%), Christian Churches (24%)</span><span class="style42">GOVERNMENT</span><span class="style13">The constitution provides for a President, 26-member Senate and 64-member House of Representatives to be elected for six years by universal adult suffrage. The President appoints a Cabinet of Ministers. The Liberian political system broke down in 1990 owing to civil war. A provisional Council of State has┬ábeen formed and a return to constitutional rule has been agreed to take effect in 1996.</span><span class="style42">GEOGRAPHY</span><span class="style13">A low swampy coastal belt borders a higher zone of tropical forest. Further inland, plateau rise to Mount Nimba at 1380 m (4540 ft). </span><span class="style42">Climate: </span><span class="style13">Liberia has a tropical climate with a wet season in the summer and a dry season in winter.</span><span class="style42">ECONOMY</span><span class="style13">Over 70% of the labor force is involved in agriculture, producing cassava and rice as subsistence crops and rubber, coffee and cocoa for export. Liberia is a major exporter of iron ore. The economy has been disrupted by a civil war since 1990. </span><span class="style42">Currency: </span><span class="style13">Liberian dollar (US currency is also in circulation).</span><span class="style42">HISTORY</span><span class="style13">Founded by the American Colonization Society in 1821ΓÇô22 as a settlement for freed slaves, Liberia was declared a republic in 1847. Black American settlers dominated the local Africans and extended their control inland. From 1878 to 1980 power was held by presidents from the True Whig Party, including William Tubman (President 1944ΓÇô71). Samuel Doe, the first Liberian of local ancestry to rule, took power in a military coup (1980), but was overthrown in a civil war (1990). Despite the presence of an ECOWAS peace-keeping force civil war continued until 1994 when all seven warring factions agreed to a ceasefire.</span></text>
